igrockspock: (star trek: new worlds)
1. Where did you go the last time you took an airplane ride?
Chicago

2. Are you a nervous flyer or a comfortable flyer?
I get very nervous about missing flights, but I'm pretty comfortable on the flight itself

3. Window seat or aisle seat?
Window, always. Looking out the window is entertaining, and I can't sleep unless I can rest my head against something.

4. What is the worst experience you've had flying?
It used to be the Air Uzbekistan plane that said CHOP HERE WITH CRASH AXE on the outside, but this summer the Air Moldova flight that attempted to take off without fuel in the tank topped it. If you're wondering what happens when you try to start a jet engine with no gas, it makes a terrible gagging noise much like your car does, except louder and scarier. The pilot tries a few times, the engine screams a few times, and then a flight attendant says "nobody panic but please take off your seatbelts in case evacuation is necessary." Then you look out the window and see a lot of emergency vehicles. The flight attendants never update you, but suddenly they start passing out drinks and cookies. Then you look outside and all the emergency vehicles have gone and a fuel tanker has appeared, and you can make a logical inference that the problem with your plane was that they forgot to fuel it.

5. What is the best experience you've had flying?
Probably any Middle Eastern airline. The food is lovely, and the customer service is so nice. Royal Air Qatar paid for me to have a transit visa and a stay in a lovely hotel when I had an overnight layover.

Still 100% in love. It is not a story about a happy family of admirable people sailing into space and having wholly noble adventures. It is a story about kind of dysfunctional people doing questionable things and slowly earning one another's trust while figuring out how to be noble(ish). If what you loved about Star Trek was unrelenting optimism and clear ethical messages, you will probably not like this show. If -- like me -- you loved the setting and idea of Star Trek but felt like everything was just a little too perfect, you will probably love this show. Also, if you would like to see a smart black lady in charge of lots of things and receiving respect from her peers while driving the action of her universe, you will fucking love this show.

A long, long time ago, I knew how to write stories that were, oh, about 3,000 words long. That time has passed. This summer, when I was filled with Star Trek nostalgia, I saw a lovely McCoy/Uhura prompt at rarepair fest and thought I would write a small treat. 9,000 words and four months later, here we are... I'm a little frustrated that it took me so long, but I'm excited that I finally got to do justice to my favorite Star Trek rare pair.

Title:Rule 69
Rating: Teen
Characters & Pairings: McCoy/Uhura, Gaila, Sulu
Summary: When Nyota agreed to let Gaila set her up on a blind date, she never imagined it would be with Dr. McCoy -- and she definitely never imagined that she would end up liking him.
Word count: 9,000
Notes: Set in an AU where Spock and Uhura amicably chose to part ways after Into the Darkness

Hello and thank you so much for writing for me! If we matched, it's because we have a lot in common, and I'm sure I'll love whatever you write. Please rest assured that I genuinely want everything I requested, and I'll be happy to receive anything we matched on. I left lots of prompts because I find such letters helpful; please feel free to alter, combine, or ignore them as you see fit.

Where shipping is considered, I'm very flexible. I like the whole spectrum from UST to getting together to established relationships or just friends with benefits. Write whatever rating suits you, because I enjoy explicit and non-explicit stories equally well. That said, I'm a pretty vanilla fangirl, so nothing kinkier than a little fun with handcuffs please.

Do not want
1. Love triangles
2. Children who do not exist in canon
3. Anything kinkier than a little fun with handcuffs
4. Rape, noncon, dubcon, or incest
5. Alternate setting AU's such as coffee shops, high schools, etc. Canon divergent AU's welcome!

Do want
1 Lots of banter and snark
2. Having an adventure together, such as a mission or a case
3. Resolving a problem or miscommunication in a relationship
4. Five things fics for any scenario
5. Friends to lovers
6. Character A isn't one to admit that they're hurting or that they need help, but Character B figures it out anyway. (Variation: Character A doesn't usually admit they're hurting, but Character B is the one person they trust enough to ask for help.)
7. Women taking the lead in asking a guy out, admitting to feelings, or initiating sex
8. Characters being attracted to one another's competence
9. Character A has a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day and Character B makes it better
10. Characters trapped in a confined space together and having interesting conversations, finally owning up to their feelings, making out, and/or working together to escape (no claustrophobia in this scenario please)

STAR WARS

HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT.

You guys, I have a new favorite Star Wars movie.

Okay, so being slightly more rational: I think it is possible this is a love-it-or-hate-it experience. The Last Jedi feels very 2017, for lack of a better word. It's like a fresh new remix of an old song you loved, and maybe you will like the remix, but maybe you will not. The humor is a little drier, the story line is a little darker, and this isn't a movie where everything works out perfectly for the heroes just because they are the good guys. It is also not as linear as the other movies - there are lots of different stories unfolding in lots of different locations, something which I loved and my husband did not.

beware the spoilers )

Even though life has been awfully busy, I managed to write a couple treats for Trick or Treat. This one was actually meant to be a gift for EveryWoman, but I didn't finish it on time. [personal profile] acequeenking asked for a story about Vader finding Leia when she was young, and I was completely smitten with the possibilities for both cuteness and evil. Although I really, really loved the way it came out, I wasn't expecting too many people to want to read it, but I was pleasantly surprised!

Title: Flesh of My Flesh
Rating: Teen
Characters: Leia Organa, Darth Vader, Grand Moff Tarkin
Summary: Leia was not adopted. She was stolen in the middle of the night and registered to House Organa with forged papers. This was kidnapping, a class one felony, and her parents could be executed -- unless she returned voluntarily to her rightful father. Immediately. A man called Grand Moff Tarkin explained this to Leia when she was eleven years old.

AO3 Meme

Nov. 5th, 2017 05:40 pm
igrockspock: (star trek: team awesome)
Last month, I officially started my own little educational consulting business, and it's 90% awesome. I already have a steady freelance writing contract and summer work lined up, but the sad thing is that it eats up all the time and energy I used to spend on fandom. On balance, making money is obviously more important than writing fanfic, but I still miss it. In lieu of actual writing, here is an AO3 meme...

1. What’s your first and second most common work ratings? Any surprises?

Teen & up: 151
General audiences: 55

This is not especially surprising. I'm terrible at writing porn, occasionally write fluff, and mostly write about grown-up issues that are not overly disturbing.

2. What is your most and least common archive warning? Do you consider yourself an adventurous writer?

Major character death (5)
Graphic violence (1)

I consider myself adventurous in that I'm willing to try out new fandoms, new ships, and new characters. I would not say I'm adventurous in writing potentially disturbing content or kinky content that would require warnings.

3. How many fics have you written in each relationship category? Is this intentional? Do you have preferences?

Gen (112)
F/M (92)
F/F (10)
M/M (8)

Doesn't everyone have preferences? I used to gravitate pretty heavily toward gen because romance is so often covered on-screen, so I wanted to write more about friendships. Also, I teach high school, so when HP was my main fandom, I had ZERO interest in reading or writing about teen romance. These days I think I write more ships. I tend to write a lot of het because I'm bi, so a het ship has one of each thing I like. And it's not exactly a secret that I'm the one fangirl whose slash goggles are completely broken.

4. What are your top 4 fandoms? Are you still active in them? Do you tend to migrate a lot?

Star Trek AOS (84)
The Avengers (36)
Harry Potter (19)
Veronica Mars (18)

I'm not super active in any of these fandoms anymore, although they are all "comfort food" for me, so I'll watch them when I feel like having something familiar and then write little ficlets sometimes. I have gotten quite a bit more migratory than I used to be. I feel like there is so much more sci-fi and fantasy content than there was when I started in fandom, so I have more choices.

5. What are your top 5 character tags? Does this match how you feel about the characters, or are you puzzled?

Gaila (26)
Natasha Romanov (34)
Spock (16)
James T. Kirk (15)
Nyota Uhura (15)

I think AO3 must have a glitch, because I've written 18 Veronica Mars stories, and most of them are about Veronica, so... Aside from that, this list reflects my early Star Trek days and my interest in female characters pretty well. I've mostly written about Jim as a supporting character, but since he's the captain, he ended up in a lot of fics.

6. What are your top 2 additional tags? What about your bottom 2? What would happen if you combined them into a fic?

Getting Together (31)
Bechdel Test Pass (28)
Humor (7)
Families of Choice (6)

Actually, I'm pretty certain I have written about all those things together, and it was The Dating Rituals of Superheroes (The Role Reversal Remix). It would need some more work-related interaction between Maria, Pepper, and Natasha, but otherwise it fits the bill.
igrockspock: (star wars: poe)
Remix this year was a mixed bag. On the one hand, I got to play with [personal profile] celeste9's lovely works; on the other hand, I got some rude anon comments. Celeste had a cute story about Poe and Finn mixing up their uniform shirts, and I immediately thought about how that could have been a career-ending mistake in the US Navy not all that long ago, so I ended up writing an AU set during the Don't Ask/Don't Tell years. I do understand how someone could find that choice odd, but it was a story I really wanted to write. As a queer person who works in a conservative profession and lives in a conservative area, the relationship choices I made were constrained by my fear of losing my job. Obviously, I'm happily married and have no regrets, but I also see our country backsliding toward less accepting times. I remember feeling lonely when I was younger because I could never find slash that actually addressed the difficult choices I was facing, so I wanted the chance to write about some of those issues. Of course, I got a rude comment almost immediately, which was disappointing but not altogether unexpected. I'm still happy I wrote the story I wanted to tell.

Title: This Is Only a Drill (The Anytime, Anywhere Remix)
Pairing: Poe/Finn
Rating: Teen
Summary: The year is 1993. The Cold War is old news. Don't ask, don't tell is brand new. Poe Dameron is the best fighter pilot in the Navy, and he's in love with a man.
Word Count: 4800

"Your ability to get through [life], even as things get harder, is worth a hundred times more than your ability to slap a smile on your face and pretend that everything is just fine."

Thank you, Matt Murdock. I really needed to hear that this week. In other news, I streamed the entire Defenders series yesterday and wrote a short fic about Foggy dealing with the aftermath (spoilers, naturally).

On the whole, I liked it. It's not flawless, but it didn't have as much dead space as some of the individual series, and they improved some areas that were lacking in Daredevil season two and Iron Fist.

Ruby, the title character of the book, is a black woman who fled to New York City when she was young but ultimately comes home to a black township in East Texas. Adjusting to life in the South after the freedoms of the North is harder than Ruby realizes it will be, and the pressure of her barely suppressed childhood traumas quickly results in severe mental illness (or, to be more accurate, something modern readers will quickly recognize as mental illness, while the townsfolk mostly blame her for "not keeping herself under control"). Ruby herself believes that she is haunted. As a child, she witnessed terrible things happening to other children, and now the souls of those children flock to her for protection. Readers get the choice of how to interpret these "haints" -- as a symbolic representation of being trapped in a moment of trauma, or as literal ghosts that cling to Ruby's skirts. The situation comes to a head when Ephram, who loved her from afar as a child, sets himself as Ruby's protector amid fierce opposition from his ultra-religious sister.

This book contains serious triggers for rape and child abuse, both of which are referenced below the cut.

I need to discuss this book with somebody (spoilers) )

Title: The Best Dressed Lie
Rating: PG
Characters: Leia, Breha Organa, Bail Organa, Grand Moff Tarkin, Han Solo
Summary: Leia begins showing signs of force sensitivity at an early age. Her parents struggle to dissuade her from investigating her new powers before Vader discovers the daughter he never knew he had.
Word Count: 5400

I rewatched Star Trek: Into the Darkness last night, and...I really love the movie. I wish that Kirk and McCoy did not sexually harass women. I wish that the role of Khan had not been given to a white guy. But in the storytelling sense, I think it's a really good movie.

I love that the characters' strength and maturity are tested by impossible dilemmas. Of course Spock wouldn't be willing to let a planet die after witnessing the destruction of his home world. Of course Kirk wouldn't let his first officer perish for the sake of a rule. Their response to those dilemmas creates a huge conflict rooted in their underlying cultural assumptions. Kirk, the brash American rule breaker, thinks it's just common sense to lie to Starfleet. Spock, on the other hand, has fought so hard to be considered Vulcan and now feels obligated to be the living embodiment of a culture someone tried to destroy. His response is totally Vulcan: tell the truth, make someone see the logic of the situation, and take full responsibility for it. Neither Kirk nor Spock understands each other's perspective, which puts a huge strain on their friendship. This is the kind of thing that happens all the time, both between individual personalities and different cultures trying to get along.

Another impossible dilemma appears when a beloved character is murdered, and the crew receives questionable orders to execute the killer. The right thing is to refuse completely, but only the oldest member of the senior staff -- Scotty -- can bring himself to do that. The rest of the crew goes with Kirk's "halfway" plan that actually makes matters worse. Chekov takes on responsibility he's not ready for. Sulu feels ambivalent about being in the captain's chair. Uhura behaves unprofessionally by starting a relationship argument on a dangerous away mission. After that, you get the second half of the movie, which is basically everyone repairing their mistakes. Uhura tries to negotiate with the Klingons by herself. Spock tricks Khan to save the Enterprise. Kirk immediately calls Scotty to admit his mistake and ask for help, then sacrifices himself for his ship. All this contrasts with Admiral Marcus, who responds to his mistake by trying to kill everyone. He claims he's looking out for Starfleet, but he's really trying to avoid responsibility for his decisions.

I've heard people claim it's not a Star Trek movie because they characters do not behave admirably. I agree. It's better than the original movies because the characters make mistakes and have to fight their way back from them. Underneath all the character conflicts is the moral dilemma of targeted killing and clandestine warfare, which we have engaged in heavily since 9/11. The movie concludes by telling us that seeking revenge is natural after loved ones have died but will turn us into the very thing we are fighting against. As someone who lived less than a mile from the World Trade Center after 9/11, I find that a very powerful message.

Hello!

After many years of clinging stubbornly to LJ, I am slowly moving my fannish presence over here. To get started, here is a really really short introduction to [personal profile] igrockspock.

Fandom: Right now, my main fandom is all the Star Wars, most especially all the Leia things. I also play in the MCU Netflix verse, especially where Claire Temple is concerned. Veronica Mars is the forever fandom that I'll always love and always write in occasionally. Past fandoms include Avengers, Harry Potter, and Star Trek AOS.

Professionally: I am a public high school teacher in the Midwestern USA. Sometimes I post about that, sometimes it shows up in my fic in obvious and not-so-obvious ways.

Personally: I love to travel. I love making budget spreadsheets for potential trips and writing how-to posts to show other people how to travel cheaply. I came home from Romania today and hope to start posting my travelogue soon.

New friends: Please stop by and say hi! My stubborn refusal to abandon LJ meant that I lost touch with a lot of online friends, so I would love to meet new people. I post anywhere from once a day to once a week, depending on how busy life is. Fannish posts are always unlocked; travel and teaching stuff is always locked. The balance of fannish and RL content is probably about 50/50, but varies a bit depending on where I am in the school year.
